The Facebook Groups vs Facebook Pages debate continues to another level as Facebook changes the Facebook Groups functionality to align with the functionality of pages.
Facebook has now officially updated it’s groups to have similar features to pages. However, Facebook maintains that they are still designed to serve different purposes “Groups are for fostering member-to-member collaboration, while Pages remain the best way to broadcast messages to your fans if you are a business, organization, public figure or other entity” (Source: Official Facebook Blog).
For my clients, I maintain the recommendation to use Facebook Pages for businesses and brands. One of the main contributing factors in this recommendation is that Groups have a limit if 5,000 members.

Excellent points. Facebook pages are definitely a must have for businesses. There’s no reason why the same business can’t have groups also. In fact, companies with multiple product lines or business units could have groups specific for those audiences.
Gabe you’re right, a business could have groups and pages to optimise the use of all functionality. The only concern is the amount of time invested in managing and maintaining the business presence on facebook, and the return on engagement, i.e. whether the business can convert their facebook activities into paying customers. In my opinion that needs to be tested for any online marketing activity and determined for each business individually.
